PREVENTION OF PILLAGING.
SPECIAL FORCE ADVOCATED. (Received June 2nd, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 2. A conference has opened at tho Chief Secretary's office of representatives of those interested in shipping, including waterside unions, to discuss the cargo pillaging evil. Mr Oakes, in opening tne conference, said the pillaging question was a. serious one, which affected the whole of Australia. The estimated loss to the State through pillaging amounted to half a million sterling annually, and some estimates went as high, as a million. Ono American skipper was reported to have said he would be lucky if ho got away from Sydney with his funnels intact. Tho Government would give all possible help to combat the evil.
The Conference carried a motion appointing a committee to enquire into tho recommendations of the recent Royal Commission on pillaging and report to the conference. Mr Paxton, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, advocated the establishment of a special force of waterside police.
