TROPICAL QUEENSLAND.
PIT FOR WHITE SETTLEMENT. (By Cable—Pr«*» Assomtioa— CopyrigM.) (Au«tr*li«a md N.Z. Cable Aasooi»ti<m.) (Received May 31st, 7M p.m.) BRISBANE, May 31. Mr W. M. Hughes has been inundated by deputations, particularly in the sugar interests, pressing various requirements. Speaking at Townsville, Mr Hughes said from what he had seen during his present visit, he was satisfied that th© men, women, and children of North Queensland exhibited all tho qualities of robustness characteristic of our race. They were a living refutation of tho silly statement' that tho tropical coastland of the far north was not suitable, for white settlement. He appealed to them never to let go tho banner on which tho policy of a White Australia was inscribed. If Australia could only be saved by black labour, then he would say rather let it perish.
