ATHLETICS.

HUD-CANTERBURY SCHOOLS' CARNIVAL.

The first annual sports meeting of th» Mid-Canterbury Public Schools' Athletfo Association was held on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday. The Management Committee had taken every care to secure entries from all echoola in the Aehburton district, with a result that the big total of 3000 was received for the 94 events on the programme. In addition to the athletio events there wer» spectacular <Hsplaye or organised games, overhead ball ( and massed drill of the combined schools. Good prizes were competed for in the eports, including! a very handsome banner presented by Mr James Pow for the school gaining the highest aggregate points in the boys' section, and another presented by Mr Pow for the school gaining the highest aggregate points in the girls' Bection, each banner to be held for one year. In addition there was a silver cup, value £lO, presented by Mr J. C. N. Grigg, to he held for one year; also threa silver cups, value £lO each, for the boy gaining the highest aggregate points in the 100 yds championship, 440yda championship, 800 yds championship, high jump and long jump under 15 years, and for the girl gaining the highest aggregate points in the 100 yds championship", 50yds championship, and 75yds skipping under 15 years. There was a very large attendance, and never before had there been so many school children together in the Ashburton Domain. The weather during the morning was cold and showery, but this did not lessen the ardour of the young athletes, all of whom entered into the spirit of the eports with great iest. Each event was cloßely contested, and some good times were put up. Mr H. J. Chapman, hon. secretary, and his numerous associates worked hard, and great credit is due to them for the manner in which they organised and carried through the programme. A good deal of interest attached to the 120 Yards Hurdle Challenge between University and Wellington. In Wellington's run off H. S. Whyte led all the way from Wilfloiit and w«e just beaten on the post, in the final he dea<J-be»ted with Wilaon* Jackaon (University), th© well-known three-quar-ter, waa the only other starter. The race waa timed at 15 4-sscc, which, having regard to the state of the turf, was excellent time. The Challenge Cup resulted:— '. Victoria College, 13 points 1; Wellington!
