TIMBER WORKERS.
WESTLAND AWARD. (SPECIAL TO "TOT PBK9S.") GREYMOUTH, March 31. The prinoipal items in tho new award of tho Woitland timber workers are as follows: —Tho rates of wages remain as in the old award, with the addition of a few occupations formerly omitted. The old overtime clause is amended making overtime for timber loading payable at a flat rate of 2s 33 per hour instead of Is 10id. A new clause dealing with travelling time reads: —Where men are engaged to perform work over one mile from tho mill, such men. shall travel one way in the employer's time except in cases where tho employer provides means of conveyance for the men. free of charge, or where a bush camp is provided for the men by the employer. A new clause deals with contracts, nad provides that any contract work coming within the scope of the award shall contain a provision that the contractor shall be bound by the terms of the award. An important provision is a new olause dealing with the payment of wages: —(a) All wages shall be paid in cash twice monthly. The first payment shall bo for ft period of two weeks and the second payment shall be for the remainder of the calendar month. Three days only shall be allowed the employer to make up the pay-sheets and puy out wages after the expiration of each period, (b) If a majority of the workers at any mill request in writing that wages should bo paid at other intervals than as provided in the sub-clause (a), the employer may act in accordance with such request, (c) Where employment is terminated, the worker shall ba paid all wages due at the expiration, of his notice, and such payment miy be mode by cheque, (d) A worker may, by writing, request that his wages may bo paid otherwise than in cash or elsewhere than -at the mill or to any person named by him, and until withdrawn by notice in writing such 'reoucst may be acted upon by the employer and worker. Tho present bonus of 23 2d per day is to be paid unless QJid until tho Court shall otherwise order.
