SPORTING.
There is every promise of success for the Amberlev Racing Club's Annual Meeting to-day, and with a convenient train service there will be a large attendance of visitors from Christchurch. A special train will leave Christohurch at 9.20 a.m., returning from Greney's road at 5.20 p.m. The fields engaged are of very useful cl-nre, and there should be some very interesting racing. Of the sis engaged in the Amberley Cup, Red Gown will probably command most support, but Gamecock and High Heels should run well. There are some smart sprint-el's in the Wattle Handicap, and Will Oakland and Deucalion both have winning form to recommend them. Of those engaged in the other events, Likelihood, Frisco Mail, Baleful, Horatius, Madam Chiron, and Fahrinade read Well.
Both trotting events have drawn }=rgo fields. In the Kowai Trot there are fifteen acceptors, including Turmoil and Dillon Shine, who have both been racing ivell recently. In the Teviotdale Trot there are seventeen engaged, and Rafferty and Edith Chimes have been showing promising form. Handicaps for the Hororata Racing Club's Annual MeGting will appear on Monday, and acceptances will cIoSB at o p.m. on "Wednesday at the Canterbury Jockey Club's office. .Warlove has retired from racing, and Wartone will eoon join her. They will go to the stud nest season. Sungleam, who burst a blood-vessel at the Cheviot R.C.'s Meeting, has resumed work, and looks none the worse for her mishap.
Mr H. A. Knight, president of the Hororata Racing Chio, has given a handsome trophy, which will go to the winner of the Hororata Cup nest Saturday. The acceptances taken last evening for the Great Easter Handicap and Great Autumn Handicap reduced tho field for the former event to 17 and for the latter to 15. The most noticeable feature was the_ withdrawal of the majority of the North Island horses en-' graced, there being new only seven Northerners in the two big events of the coming Autumn Meeting at RiccartOTi. The fields, however, include some of the best handicap performers of the season, and good contests are assured. It is worth noting that Vespucci and Pluto, two of R. J. Mason's team, head the list in each race. After declaration of forfeits, thirteen horees axe left in the Challenge Stakes, while ten two-year-olds are still engaged in the Champagne Stakes. The general entries are very satisfactory. The figures for each race are as follows, those for last year being shown in parentheses:—Kildara Hurdlefi, 9 (13); Autumn Plate, 13 (12): Russley Plate, 14 (20): Sockburn Handicap, 11 (9); Gimcrack Handicap, 31 (26); Courtenav Welter, 20 (15); Peerswick Hurdles, 13 (15): Yaldhurst Welter, 23 (22); Autumn Nursery, 14 (19); Addinston Handicap, 24 (21); Templeton Handicap, 20 (19); Final Handicap, 20 (21). " A writer in the "Sporting Life"
states that the number of horses racing last vear in Orc'il .Britain and Ireland tras 4394, or 299 more than in 1920 and 339 more than in 1913. The latter total! 6tood as a record until 1920. In 1917, when racing during the war period was at its lowest ebb, the number of torseci racing was 1911. Compared with IS2O, there were last year 29 more two-year-olds, seven fewer throe-year-olds, 104 more four-year-olds, and 173 moro horsea five years ola and over. Thero has thus been a complete recovery from tho stagnation caused by the war. Something in a name. The English racehorse Damaged Goods (by Glaagerion—Elfland), originally sold at 900 guineas, was sold in England Last year for seven guineas, while recently ho found another new owner who paid five guineas for him. A French victory in the Gimcra/ck Stakes would at least assure something out of the common in the oratory at tho subsequent dinner. There are possibilities in that direction, since this year's Gimeraek entries include M. de Saint} Alary'a Terre Feme (by Stedfast— Terro de Sienne), and, as "1/6 Jockey" (Paris) says: "If M. de Saint Alary, one of our most distinguished Parisians, won the raoe, he would not fail to make, on thai> occasion, an interesting speech, spirited and full of humour." A grandson of Carbine won the South African Derby on December 27th. The winner waa Mr Henry Nourse'a bay colt Dignitary, by Greatorex.
, For years the OaJkleigh stud, at "Widcien, N.S.W., has been one of the luckiest breeding establishments in Australia., but ill-luck hasi at Last overtaken it. Messrs Thompson Bros, suffered a tremendous loss last week when their great station Tressady died as a result of an accident. It is stated that some days before Tressady got his head ca:nght in a fence and possibly ricbed his neck badly. Tressady, who was by Persimmon from Simplify, was foaled in England 7 } and was imported to New South Wales, m 1911. He cost Messrs Thompso" Bros. 6000 guineas at the dispersal sale of Mr W. Brown's Segenhoe stud iour years ago. Solfanello was an acceotor fc- the South Yarra Handicap at the V.A.T.C. Meeting at Caulfield on March 18th, but though he was on the course he did not run._ Commenting on this, "Archer" writes in the "Australasian'': "One would think that if a £I3OO prize does not attract hia connexions, they must hav©_ something rather good in view. He is a plain-looking customer, this gelding, but he is powerfully built, and looks as if he could travel when at his pop. On his record in New Zealand he is a first-class sprinter." Tho. weather is rather threatening for th« conclusion of the Wellington Meeting tomorrow. There was heavy rain for an hour in tho city this morning, but none at Trentnam, ."and if the weather keeps fine tho track, will be dn splendid order. The fields aro of more moderate dimensions, but the day'o catfd is decidedly interesting. Four, have been left in the Gold' Cup, and the winner will pay a useful price, for Amytha3, Kick Off, and Winning Hit all have soma staunoh admirers. Proceedings open with the Second High Weight Handioap in which Alteration should br suited by tho increase in distance. The rfutt Handicap is somewhat of -a puzzle, and tho distance may be over far for Sunny Comer, but Trathful and Mustard Pot should stay out overy inch. Island may, be riddon by a etronger horseman to-morrow, while the extra distance in tho Autumn Handicap will be all' in favour of Maraueteur. Bitters is a useful sort, and not overburdened with 7at . 51b. The Pacific Handicap should be one of tho best events of the day, and provide a meeting between 'R®pin©, Ares, and Finelli. Absurdum is to be produced for the'first time at the Meeting in the Suburban Handicap, while Danger Zone will bo all the better for his first day's race. MANAWATU~RC..'S AUTUMN MEETING.
