The first case in the trial of German war criminals has commenced ''.., t-■ .n Heyner, a Landwehr corporal, was accused of ill-treating British prisoners at Herme Camp, Westphalia, because they refused to work jn the coal mines. Evidence was given that he struck prisoners with the butt end of his rifle, and put them under cold water for an hour. .... Heyner denied the statement, saying; ' 'Two or tbreej refused to work. I had to be severe in,order to show them that my orders must be obeyed."
