COUNTY COUNCILS.

The monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held yesterday. Present -Messrs C. Rcid {chairman), G. Murdoch, H. B. C. Withell, A. Mogsen, H. Maguini.ess, T. Blackley, W. T. Lill, W. Goodwin, F. Frampton, W. G. Gallagher, A. Horsey, and W. Lochhead. The chairman stated that since the leat meeting the annual balance-ehest had been duly audited and found correct. Referring to the estimates, he remarked that fully £IO,OOO would be required for hospital levies, us it was now purposed to contribute' towards maternity homes at Ashburton, Rakaia, and Methven.

Mr Reid was unanimously re-elected chairman.

A letter was read from the Public Work* Department Baking the Council to deposit £SOO to tile credit of the Public Account, and to pass a. formal resolution to find the diif erence between £SOO and one-third of the actual cost of the erection of Blowing Point bridge. »

It was decided that as the work went on the Council was willing to make progress payments, and that in the past the Council had not received payment in advance from the Government' fox bridges erected by the Council.

The County Engineer reported that the estimated cost of erecting a bridge at the Woolsbed creek, Mount Some*s, would be £l6ll, and si Stony creek £1203. It to decided to postpone the erection of the bridges for the present. Mr A. Christie, traffic inspector, was appointed to collect the necessary signatures to the petition for the formation of the Electric Power Board.

Mr John Wood,,late of Hayfield, was appointed to represent the Council on the As. cessment Court. A grant cf £SO was made to the Ashburton Technical School.
