SWIMMING.
LTJDY LANGER CARNIVAL. There was another good attendance at the Tepid Baths last evening, when the second and last of the New Zealand Swimming As-' eociation's carnivals in connexion -with the visit of the famous American swimmer, Ludy! Langer, the recognised middle distance champion of the world, was held. The carnival pToved a Mghly successful one, and the spectators were treated to some very interesting! swimming. Chief interest centred in Langer's appearance in the 440 yds inter-club handicap, that being accepted as his best distance. The American gave a fine exhibition, «and had no difficulty in winning from Batchelor. Even though he was suffering from a cold, Langer covered the distance in Smin 33 3-ssec, which is 11 2-ssec better than the New Zealand 1 record, and 1 2-ssec better than the time, he put up in Wellington last week. A feature of the race was. the excellent showing of R. Wilkinson, of the United Club, a boy of 14 years, who just managed to defeat Langer in the 220 yds event on the previous evening. The visitor's second appearance was in the 100 yds ©cratch invitation race. He did not exert himself unduly, as the time, 65sec, shows, but he Bprinted early enough to win comfortably. Later in the evening he gave an exhibition of swimming similar to his disrjlay on the previous evening. This efternoon Langer will give an exhibition and a leeturette to school children at 3.30 o'clock. Another interesting event "at last night's carnival ws the 50yds men's championship of Canterbury, which was won by W. P. Sutherland (United) after a splendid race. During l the evening Mr W. E. D. Bishop, president of the N.Z.A.S.A., presented to N. Batchelor' tho medal for the 100 yds boys' intermediate championship, which he won at the recent championship meeting at Dnnedin.
