ARTILLERY ASSOCIATION.
SMOKE CONCERT.
The Canterbury Artillery Association held a smoke concert last night, at which General Richardson was present as a guest of honour. Colonel Beattie presided.; and in proposing the health of the guest said that all the old Volunteers .would remember . when .General Richardson first came out as. a master gunner and. what splendid results he had attained in improving the efficiency of the Coast and Field Artillery. General Richardson, in responding, said lie wbb very pleastd to be meeting that evening two ■ generations ofj, gunners. He .traced the Jvariouß.istages of defence development in New Zealand, and said the object of the Defence £6l-' icy at the present time was to organise the whole forces of. .t"he country so that they would make, reajly one complete' .formation. The icfea now. was. that ihe New Zealand Forces should consist of one complete and a certain' number of mounted brigades, and that would entail a considerable increase in 'Artillery, The most modern guns were now in the Dominion, arid the E Battery would be supplied with them within a week ior two. The future reserve' list of officers would,be a genuine brie., and would consist only of officers who, would be prepared to incur some obligation in the matter of training. The reserve list would contain a classifies-j tion .of men according to age, and when: officers-were required-at .any time those in the first class would, he' drawn oh first.'
