SWIMMING.

LTJDT LANGER CARNIVAL. Though the season is rather far tdvanced for swimming, there, was a very fair attendance at the Tepid Baths last evening, when the Now Zealand Amateur Swimming Association conducted a carnival for the purpose of enabling the Christchurch public to see the famous American swimmer, Ludy Langer, the world's middle distance champion, in aci tion. The carnival proved a very successful one, and some fiist-ciase swimming was eeerk Langer appeared in the final of the 220 yds handioap. and starting from scratch, and using the American crawl stroke, he showed) what a great swimmer he is. He was beaten, b» inches for first place, but his time, 2minj si 2-6 sec, lowered the New Zealand record of 2min 37seo for the distance by 5 8-6 sec. Later in the evening Langer gave an exhibition, for which he was loudly applauded. He gave examples of "the evolution of Bwimmin?. or how I learned to" swim"; the side undex-arm, the side over-arm, the double overarm or trudgeon, the trudgeon crawl, the American crawl, a fine, even stroke with continuous action, adaptable to all speeds and distances; and a little known but very fast and effective over-arm. Langer showed himself to be without doubt the finest middle distance swimmer yet seen in Christchurch., To-night he will swim in the 400 yds handicap —his best distance—and in the 100 yds invitation scratch race. Miss Gwitha Shand won the) 100 yds ladies' championship with the greatest ease. Her time, 72 2-s»ec, was over 3eeo slower than her own New Zealand record, but was well within the New standard! time of 88seo. Miss Briated and Miss Sixneo, who finished second. and third, also gained! standards, their times being ftlseo and 87. 2-8 soo respectively. Final —R. Wilkinson (United), 80seo, 1; Ludy Langer (America), ecr, 2. Ludy Langer started in the final, and gave away 35sec. Wilkinson, on the. 80 sec mark, got well away, and was half-way in the second lap when Langer started. Swimmingi a beautiful stroke, with superb ease, the American at once Bet off alter the leadens, and his quick, powerful turn greatly impressed the spectators. At the end of hia second lap he had reduced the deficiency by l about hali, and in starting off on the fourth lap he was about a quarter of a lan behind Wilkinson. When they turned for tfie fifth lap it looked aa though the visitor could not lose, but Wilkinson stuwak gamely to his task, and won by ft couple of feet.
