SHANTUNG.
DATE'OF RETURN TO CHINA.
AMERICA SEEKS INFORMATION. o (By OaW&T-Eress (Australian and N.«j. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON. April 18. It is understood that the Jlarding Administration heartily favours extracting from Japan a definite statement concerning the date on- which Japan will withdraw from Shantung, not only legally, but actually. The Administration also strongly favours maintaining'the open-door policy in China, being determined to assure American merchants the same opportunities as Japanese m Chinese markets. The two are felt to be intimately connected. It is recalled that President Harding, when a' Benator, favoured Senator George W. Norris's reservation on* the Shantung settlement, by which it was proposed that China should be substituted for Japan in taking over the -former German rights there.
