CARGO PILFERING.
COST TO COMPANIES.
(By C»bl«—Press (Kitttw'.' Telegrams.) LONDON, April 18. An interim report of €he committee of the Chamber of tohipping on the pilfering of goods in transit emphasised the fact that the average claims paid by seven different steamship companies .engaged in the same trade ranged from twenty-one to sixty-two pence per ton of cargo. The report sajp that there is evidence that the divergence is mainly "due to the varying practices aboard vessels in regard to the tallying and watching of cargo. A recommendation is made for more efficient control and supervision by ships' officers of loading and discharging operations.
