DRAINAGE BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. . The Chrißtchuicli Drainage Board met last night' Present—Messrs Walter Hill (chair-, man), F. Burgoyae, S. C. Bingham, F.' Storey, C. HiU, H. Holland, H. JUngford, W? "Walter, and H. J. Ottey. . ' It was decided to call tenders fofc one year for cleaning tho drains.' A letter was received, from Mr W. C. Olliver complaining of the pollution of Dudley ■ Creek and the silting up oi the rivor Avon. Tho chief inspector reported that there was a, /great amount of truth in Mt Olliver's statements. The creek was a'dumping ground for garden refuse. 'He had caught several doing it, and stopped them. Tho trouble was the Board's solicitors advised they had no • case unless they could prove- obstruction. Floating matter was not aa obstruction. Ao regards tho sewage in the oreek, sewers were the only remedy. Tho Board decided to prosecute xn the event of an offender being detected. In reply to a request from the Labour Department as to tho method of sewage disposal in operation in tho Pa-panui district where the iiew workers' homes are - being erected, it waa decided to reply, following .the engineer's report, ,that tno system in operation was for the nightsoil to bo re-. moved by the County Council's carts. The Hiccarton town clerk advised that the borough valuations for tho year ending March aißtj, 1921, were as follows.— Capital value, rural are* £517,667, eewerage £50,720. Total £568,237. The. rates JeTided were, rural area £462 14s Sd, sewerage area £lB7 Ua.ld. Total £6BO 7s 96. ' . , Messrs Guthrie- Bros, applied for perniissioit*to construct a septic tank for tho new Boys' High School building, Straven street, Hiccarton, and to discharge the effluent through agricultural pipes laid in boulders into the south branch of tho i - iv»t Avon which "runs through tho ■ school •property. The scheme would only be a temporary measure pending tho extension of the sewer. ~*The Board's assistant engineer reported he 'could tee no objection to the.Board granting tho reqtiest as a. temporary measiuc, as there was a very large volume- of water m tho stream at the proposed school site. . The Board granted permission, the work to bo carried out to the satisfaction of tho engineer. ~,'*«... Mr "W. S. Charlsworth complained of the *damage caused to his property at Woolstou • by sea water coming up the drains on tho Canal Reserve. , The Board .decided.to disclaim responsibility. ' . , . •' Mr TV. T. Brand and others complained of tho swamping of their land at Bromley. Tho matter was referred to the Works Committee for inspection and .report. Mr A. D. J.mkins wrote complaining- of Jackson's Creel: overflowing into, his section on tho road, near Wilson's Bridge. The inspector reported that the section was en old worked out shingle bed; and it was for tho owner to build up the tap* which had been trodden down • by horses, thereby allowing the wafer to flow over. It was decided to ask the engineer to rei port on the situation.
