CITY COUNCIL.
L\AST NIGHT'S MEETING. ' The Christchurch City Council met laet night. Present—The Mayor (Dr. Thacker, M.P.), and Cra. J. W. Beanland (DeputyMayor), F. E, Cooke, H. Hunter, E. H. Andrews, F. Burgoyne, O'Eorke, A; Manhire, H. Worrail, J. O rt Jameson, C. S. Harper, J. A. Flesher, E. F. Stead, C. P. Agar, H. T. Armstrong, E. Langley, and A. Williams. Leave of absence was granted Cr. A. Mc£ellar. . . Tbe financial statement showed that the general, rate levied totalled £83,085 6s Id, of which 3s 8d was collected, leaving £3151 2s 5d still payable. The district fund was £104,189 Oa lOd in debit, £65,992 9s 5d being for temporary loans. A letter was received from the Spreydon Burgesses' Association asking the Council to keep the Spreydon Council Chambers as a meeting room and library for the Spreydon district.
The request was granted. The Christchurch Domains Board forwarded, a copy of a resolution passed by it fixing the amount, of the rate to be paid by the City of Christchurch in respect of the Domains at £1612 las 7d. (Last year's rate was £1550 15s 7d).
The secretary, Hospital Commission, wrote asking if the Council desired to tender any evidence to the Commission set up to enquire into the question of hospital subsidies, etc., and if so, to forward such evidence in writing to the secretary of the Hospital Commission, Department of Health, Wellington, and to furnished the name and address of a representative of tho Council appointed for the purpose of appearing before the Commission to give further evidence should it be deemed necessary. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. The Reserves Committee reported that the leases of reserves at Kakaia, Lyndhurst, and Cairhbtae were put up for auction, by Messrs Matson and Co. on the 80th ultimo, but were not sold as the reserved rent was not reached. The leases would be. again submitted to auction on May 14th.
The Electricity Committee reported, that it was decided, in taking over the Spreydon Borough electrical reticulation, to retain the present "staff., unjil the new been fully taken over, and it was more accurately ascertained what extra work wois involved. . Application for the supply .of night light lighting' for a playing field in Hagley Park was received from the Eugby Football Union. The committee agreed to give a supply each evening from 7 to 10, except Fridays and Sundays, for a charge of &Vi per month,, the Union to bear part cost of the. additional mains involved in giving supply. Several applications for supply, involving an extension to the Council's mains\ v.-ore considered, but in view of the.present inability to secure additional loan money, _ it was decided, that it was not possible to give supply for the time being. , The report was adopted.
