Bain fell early in : ", iho'morning, twt'the weather cleared by 11 ' o'clock, only to be followed by a howling fcoutn-wost wind, which blew wita great force during the' afternoon. In' most of Uw events tno lields .were, large, and some good racing ! was witnessed. The Hawke's Bay sportsman, Mr W. G. Stead, won the Manawatu. Spires'. .Produce Stakes with Absurdum, and. the Awapuni Gold Cup with that groat galloper, Sasanof, who was seen to advantage with the sting, out of the ground. Both horses were ridden by H.'Gray. Mr W. R. Kemball's Rebuff easily accounted 'for a weak .field in - the Autumn Plate, and being fourth favourite paid a useful divilend. Old Gold, and Nga- - kanui raced in close company until reaching the stand, where ;the.last-named lo9t: his •rifier, who, however, escaped injury.. Old . improved his position in the back stretch, and led Fisher to the last hurdle. • Fsher then took charge and won comfortably from Old Gold, who did not'jump well, and Lord Kagar, both horses tiring badly in " tho concluding stages of tho race. llist ■Line did not look ready to.do himself jus- "'! tice, while • the other starters performed poorly- . ■ ■ ■ ' •The Prince of Wales Handicap was a fine ■ race, the top weight. Vagabond, winning nicely from Bonetter and Borealis. ABterina, Ualiiax, and. Bonetter in turn took the lead" but at the entrance to the straight the field closed np, and Vagabond came out from the ruck and won full of running. Askari and Isabel: never threatened danger, and were baaicn a long way from home. A highrclaas field of nine two-year-olds contested tho Thirteenth Manawatu Sues' Produce Stakes, Tamatete, Absurdum, and The Hawk monopolising the betting. In the preliminary canters no fault could be found with the manner in which any of them moved, but Panache was sore, and Panther and Danger Zone looked green. After a short delay at the start, caused through the field breaking away twice, it was despatched to a> good start, Tamatete and Thespian being the first to show out from Absurdum and The Hawk. Tamatete led into the straight, where The Hawk came fast, and actually headed Tamatete, with Absurdum being hard ridden. Fifty yards from the winning post \bsurdum gofan opening on the rails, and hi an exciting finish defeated Tamatete by a narrow margin, with The Hawk close up • ;hird.-The winner visas handled in excellent Hvle'by H. Gray, and-the success of Mr Stead's gelding was largely due to Gray's - • gtneralship. Thespian registered a good perlormanoe, finishing close up fourth. A large field of nineteen faovd the barrier in the Woodhey Hack Handicap,'Makere and Strategy carried over , one-third of the money on the machine. ' The start was a straggling one, Melting Moments, Lady Eotiropo, and Springtide being left at the post. fully half the field held a winning chance at the distance and in a great finish Amber Tip won from Strategy and Taiawhiti, the k inner paying close on » third of a century.

Sasanof scored a popular win in the Awapuni Gold Cup, giving his owner, Mr W. b. Stead, his second success in tho race. Listowel led for six furlongs, when Sunart and Dno drew clear. Two furlongs from homo Sasanof, who was lying fourth, made a forward move, and galloping freely beat his younger rival, Duo, by a length, with Rouen and .Sunart the next to finish. The Linton Hack Handicap attracted the large field of twenty-four, Festivity bein~ a warm favourite. The field was quickly strung out, but Malaga, Festivity, and Equitable were always m a handy position, the first-named winning with a lot in hand from tho iVoimte, Festivity, who was not too well placed in the early stages of the Solid support .was forthcoming for Bindle in tho Telegraph Handicap, the next m demand being Golden Bubble, Tigritiya, and Chimera. Of the quartet Golden Bubble and Bindle made the best showing, but were easily held safe by Aetinome, one ot .the lightly-weighted division, who paid close on a quarter ° f B century. ■ Bindle and Mustard Pot were always well placed, and raced- in close company at the head of affairs until a furlong from homo, when their condition gave out, but Bindle stayed on and finished second.
