. CHEVIOT. Tlio last meftting of the Cheviot County Council was attended' by Crs. T. StevenBoil (chairman)' J. H. L. Hiatt, S. Douglas, A. D. Anderson, AV. L. Foster, P. Patonj and G. L. Rutherford. The Waipara County. Council wrote that the necessity of expending eomo £1350. in reducing tlio grade on Foster's Cutting had been brought under/ the notico o( tlio ALin- , later of Public Works, and that, if the Government and Awdtere,. Cheviot, and Kaikoura Councils, and the Automobile Association would assist, there was every prospect of tho work being carried out. It was resolved to reply that the Council favoured the proposal, and suggesting that the -Waipara Council, as 'he. controlling authority, allocate tho cost to each body, with a view to arriving at an amicable settlement. * I It WWI decided to support tho Canterbury Progress League in its protest against the cessation of work on the Harper river diversion. 1 . . The Commissioner of Crown lands' wrote 'tjhat the "claim for • work' doiie "oh"Brophy'6 road had been apnrovea. The Public Works Department -fcrote that existing grants for bridges could not be' increased, but that th-3 Counoil's application for increase® would be considered when new estimates Were being compiled. | , The clerk was instructed to write to the Coniniissioiier of Crown Lands' as to . the spreading of gorse on Crown leaseholds. It was resolved to place pipo culverts on the.? Mendip-Cdnway road.Complaints having been received of wandering etoak, it was decided that in no case ! must the ranger hand over stock unless rescued and paid for in terms of tho Impounding Act. V AMTJRI. At the last meeting of the Amuri County Council there were present—Crs. M. Bethell (nhairman); H. T.. Beaven, J. W. Black.. H. R. Davinwm, B. he Cletc Latter, R. Mercer, and G. 0. Rutherford. Leave of absence was granted Cr. W. Harimer and Cr. W. Harold Atkin&on. ■■■■■, The resident engineer asked for plans of the Gates bridge. The appointment of the new water-race csretaker was annulled, and the present caretaker was asked to continue his duties. TKo secretary of the Waimakariri Harbour Board notified that the county clerk, Kaiapoi, would be the returning officer for the Harbour Board poll. _ Or. J. W. Black asked for a. deviation of the water-race. Kotioe of motion was given to rescind the resolution ttfit no further deviations be Made. The chairman asked for a report from councillors' on intended new work, • eo that an estimate'could be prepared for next meeting.
