CASUALTIES.

A middle-aged man named Daniel James Hanrigan was found on Tuesday evening in a paddock at Halswell with his tiliroat cut. He had evidently been lying there for two,or three days, andi was. in a very low condition wnen admitted to the Christchureh Hospital, though he was alive at an early hour Wilis morning. Hanrigan is a shearer, and a native of Batiiur»t. The indications are that the wound was self-in-flicted. The Coroner, Mr S. E. -McCarthy, held an inquest yesterday into the death of a married woman named Mary Violet Josephine Genevieve Bruuton, aged 46 years, who was found dead in bud by her husband at 38 Chester street yesterday morning. Dr. A. B. Pearson, who conducted a post-mortem, said that death was due to heart failure, associated with chronic myocarditis, and the husband of the deceased also gave evidence. He said that when they retired to bed the deceased then appeared to be in her usual state of health, but about 5.30 a.m.; when he woke, he noticed that her hand was cold. He then called a doctor. He heard nothing during the night. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony. A labourer employed at Islington, supposed to be Jeremiah Cuughlan, was found drowned in about a foot of water in the Ashley river yesterday. The body was found by Mr A. Pulley, who, about a week ago, discovered a swag on his farm not far from the river. When mustering yesterday he found the body, on which was found 10s Cd in money, and a prohibition order issued in the name of Jeremiah Cougfran, and dating from March 21st. An inquest will be held this morning at Bangiora.
