A meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Lucerne Campaign Committee uas held at the secretary's offices, Cashel street, last evening, and it was decided that the time was ripe-to encourage the growing of lucerne throughout the province. To start the campaign it was arranged to call a public mieeting at an early date, and to exhibit there some of the remarkable growths already obtained on various soils. • HANMER SPRINGS. A recently played nine-bole bogey handicap for Mrs C. S. Nevill.s prize, open to lady members of tnu local golf club, was won by Mrs tinstone. ' • The difficulty in regard to the reopening of the school has been temporarily overcome by the appointment, for a period; of Mr and Mrs J. (nil-landers,-retired-■Bchool teachers. It is expected that the trouble in regard to accommodation, both for school teachers and others requiring at permanently, will soon be overcome. A boarding-house, which has token only a limited number of guests this season, recently changed hands, and it is understood that tiho" house will be workea to its full capacity, and remain open during the winter months, thus, filling a much-felt want here of recent years. CHEVIOT. A bazaar was held at Cheviot on, Saturday last in aid of the funds of St. John's Church. At 2 o'clock, Mr Bradstock, oh behalf of the president of the committee, thanked the various stall-holders for the work they had done and the donors of produce, and then called on Mrs G. W. Forbes, to officially open the bazazar, which she did in a very neat and appropriate speech. The stalls were well patronised, and the pictures acted as a great draw, the house being packed at both' sessions. The N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. kindly supplied Delco .light to the marquee and buildings, and Mr Lindsay, their representative, was in charge of the pictures. ' The following acted as stallholders JVlrs Davidson, Miss Peake, and Miss Maffan; lollies, Misses Wilkinson .and Mrs Keys-Wells; bran tub, Miss Keys-Wells; fancy/stall, Mrs Dyer and Mrs Elliott; meat, Messrs Me'Gifiertand Geesan; produce, Mrs and Miesc-Geeson,- *Mrs -Benton, arid T Mrs Warmsley. The church will benefit to the extent of, about £l5O, which should be very gratifying to those who worked so hard for the success of the bazaar. started in Cheviot on--Sat-urday, when a match was played, between Mackenzie and Domett . A general meeting of footballers will be heli on Saturday evening, when fixtures will be drawn up; for the season. . The weather' continues fine. ;Th<> ;nor'-west gales of tihe last few -days have completely dried up the little feed that was, left. The outlook for the winter is very serious. * The Mackenzie School Committee met on Monday evening, when the headmaster reported that Miss Ferguson and Miss O'Connor had been appointed probationers, - Messrs Armitage and Bighall, o.f the Education Board, waited the committee with reference to the removal of the school. Several 'sites were inspected, and it was finally decided to ask that the ochool be transferred to a sit© in the middle of the township. SPRINGSTON. ,■ , The opening of theSpringston South Soldiers' Memorial Hall will take place this day week. LEBSTON. The Leeston Progress League -held a special meeting to receive the- report of a sub-committee and fully consider whether it would be in the best interests of the township to have it constituted a town district. In the absence of the president (Dr. Volckman), Mr G. W. Purser was voted to the chair, and there was a good attendance. -After a good deal of discussion, in the course of which members spoke strongly in favour of the proposal/' a resolution was carried unanimously affirming the desirability of forming a town district. It was decided to invite all ratepayers to a meeting in the Town Hall on April 26th, vpf-ien the advantages o! having a Town'"Board will be fully set forth. Speakers for the. meeting | were appointed. LAKESIDE. At a largely attended public meeting held in the Memorial Hall on Monday night, an approximate statement of accounts in connexion with the recent Paddy's Market, held in aid of the hall debt extinction fund, was presented bv the secretary (Mr H. iSehnelle). This showed that the -gross receipts to dai.«> were £316 15s 7d. The txpenditu-e' was estimated at £l9 10s 4d, leaving a balance of. £29.0.15s 3d. There was stilly a sum of about £2O outstanding, so that the total net proceeds would be about £316. This would enable the whole of the.debt to be liquidated, and leave a substantial sum in hand for improvements. Votes of thanks were accorded the chairman, secretary, treasurer, ladies, and all workers and contributors. A special vote of thanks was accorded Mrs D. Lochhead, who had nt , m « st of the money at the time the hall was built, and Mr John Me Laehlan, who subsequently took over the liability and made no charge for interest. J he Ellesmere Pipe Band had an enjoyable trip to Hawardeii last Fridav on the occasion of the show there, and Jnghly complimentary references to tlw band were made by many visitors to the show.
