The Canterbury College Club opened the winter season on Saturday afternoon, there being a large gathering of players present, and a few visitors. The club is now in possession of jis hard courts, situated in Hagley Park, near Victoria Lake. Four of ike courts are oriented, according- to orthodox lines, but two lie east and w«6t. Expert opinion, based on experience is that courts so laid out are practically useless. These two courts were not in -Use on Saturday. Th» opening was quite informal. The names of the players present were taken, and a lankeo tournament airanged, mixed doubles being played. Tho courts bein,? unsheltered lost nothing of the force of the gale which rag«d throughout the afternoon, and precision in play was a matter of difficulty. During the afternoon Dr. Hight declared tho £easan open, and the Ladies' Singles Champion Cup was presented to All ss, G. Willcox.
