SETTLEMENT OF GUM AND PUMICE LAND.
: —— '.■ (MISS ASSOCIATION TEI/KGEAH.) WELLINGTON, April 7. Steps are being taken by the Minister • of Lands to exercise the powers' given him for the settlement of gum and pumice lands under the homestead system. Regulations are now being drawn up. Settlers will occupy the land free of cost for a period oi years, and will be given financial assistance by the Government while bringing the land into productivity. Subsequently they will nave the right to acquire the freehold 'bv instalments, advances that have been mado to them being capitalised for the purpose. The first block to be dealt with under the system will be about 20,000 acres of gum .land near Helensville. The second will probably be an area of pumice land in" the "Rotorua district.
