ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS' SOCIETY.

The first meeting for the year of the I Christchurch Aocountant Students' Society wag heid on Monday. MfJ. S.-Day, president, occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of over forty members. The president delivered a short address, outlining, the programme for the current year, and dealing generally with the objects the committee had in view towarda promoting the society and further establishing its usefulness to the accountancy profession." The committee had drawn up a fortnightly ♦syllabus for the coming session, which included, in addition to the ordinary meetings, several lectures by prominent Christchurch legal gentlemen on those subjects of law with which .accountants were chiefly con-

ceraed. The conditions for .the Best Shield, which Mr W. E. Best had given for competition in debate, had not teen finally arranged, but -Mr Best had expressed the wish that the competition "should be thrown open to any accountant students' society in New Zealand, so was the probability of something in the nature of a debating tournament being held ,in Ohristchurch. this year. . The .prospects of., the coming session were very promising. Correspondence was. read from the Accountancy a»d Commerce Publications, Ltd., Wellington, and the Government Printer, agreeing to grant discounts on the purchase of books or'of copies of Acts to financial members of the society. A series of ten-minute papers were given by Mr S. J. Hearne on "Negotiable Instruments," by Mr H. Armitage on "The Slip System of Bookkeeping," and by Mr A. L. Nicholson on "The Labour Outlook." Eachpaper was subjected to criticism ,by many of those present, the lecturers providing further explanation, while a general discussion also took place. At the conclusion, the chairman congratulated the speakers on the high standard of their papers.
