OBITUARY.

MR JOSEPH GASKIN.

Mr Joseph 'Gaskin, late proprietor of the. Somerset Hotel, Duvauchelle, died in Christchurch on Saturday after a long illness.' The late Mr Gaskin was for a number of years licensee of the Lake Forsyth Arms Hotel, Little Biver, and about ten years ago. purchased the Somerset Hotel, Duvauchelle, from Mr F. Wright. About two years ago. he sold the hotel, owing to failing health, to Mr E. Samuels, the .present pro- ( prietor. Mr Gaskin, while living _in the Peninsula district, interested himself in Agricultural and Pastoral Association work, and was a keen supporter of both local associations. He also had a wide knowledge of vetenn.ary work, and manv farmers have been indebted to him for his assistance, which he always gavfe freely when it was required. ',

CAPTAIN BERNECH. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.'*) DUNEDIN, April 5. Captain Bernech, a retired sea cuptain, died suddenly in Who street last night. He was seventy-four years ot ago. The late Captain Bernech was born at Trieste on January Ist, 1847. He arrived in New Zealand at an early age, and was for nine year 9 in tho service of the Otago Harbour Board previous to joining the Union Steam Ship Company in March, 1876, as master of the Beautiful Star He was in command at various periods of the old Maori, Southern Cross, Mahinapua, CWiau, Penguin, Flora, Cor • inna, To Anau Hauroto, Wakatipu, Mapourika, Moura, \v a 'hora; Talune. Tarawera, Monowai, Waikave, and Warrimoo. He retired from the Union Company's service on December 31sl of 1909, and had lived in retirement ever Bince. At that time he was the commodore of the company's fleet.

Many still carry with them the effects of their war service. One called upon to make the supreme sacrifice is. Mr L. C. Kenny, of Tahunanui, Nelson, whose death has now occurred as the result of being gassed on the Somme, where he served for two and a half years as a telegraphist to the New Zealand Forces. The' late Mr Kenny had been in a poor state of health since his return from the front. ,
