CHEVIOT. The Cheviot branch of the Young Helpers' Lcaguo held tho annual bosopening at the residence of Mrs Bradstock, rice-president of tlie L«ague. Whilo the boxes were- being opened, tho children occupied the tinw with games and afternoon tea, which was provided b'v several interested ladies. Tho siun of £6 18s 3d was found to be in the boxes. A special collection made by the children of £3 5s 6d, together with an annual donation of 10s from Mr W. F. Jackmau. gives the satisfactory total of £lO 13s 9d to be sent to Dr. Barnardo's Homes. Robert Forbes and Avis Bradstock each received a badge for special contributions. ' Tho special prizes at the recent eliow were won as follows: —Mr A. E. Denton's trophy for most points in outside events, 3|r Eric Winskill; Messrs Stevenson and Gillandcr's special prize for most points in the produce shed, Mrs ! Stevenson; Mr T. Gee's special for most | points in cobs and ponies, Miss Clifford.
EANGIORA. A fne' at Rydal Downs destroyed a four-roomed cottage belonging to Mr J. H. Ensor, and the whole of the contents, the porperty of Mr R. A. Scott.' a returned soldier. The furnituro and other effects, which the owner valued at about £350, were insured for £l5O in the State office.
KAIAPOI. Mr L. Oldhani, on his departure from Kaiapoi, was the recipient "of a'Kaiapoi rug. Mr W. D. Barrett, in making the presentation, referred to the good feeling which had always existed between Mr Oldham and the Maoris .of Tuahitfi, and to the assistance ho had rendered them at t!hc Native Land Courts.
WAUIATE.
The Mayor (Mr "W. R Evans) is not seeking re-election except as a councillor. Crs. Collett, Bobm, Morrison, Nicole and Fulton are seeking election, .also Messrs 'A. ltiach, R. Clear, and F. Childs. Cr. F. Nash is standing for the Mayoralty. The Rev. Canon Cocks, having been dulv instituted by Bishop Julius on Friday night, conducted harvest thanksgiving services at the Anglican Church /on Sunday. The Rev. A. N. Scotter was farewelled at the Methodist Church on Sunday. He is leaving this week for Rangiora. * T,he session of Knox Church • is protesting against the Aero Company conducting *'joy rides" on Sunday, and flying Tow over the church during service. The Waim'ate Ministers' Asso-c-iaion i» memorialising the Mayor on similar bines.
At tho annual meeting of the Plunket Society, the following officers were elected:—President, Mrs E C. Studholme ; vice-presidents, Mesdanics E. C. Hayes and G. Manchester; secretary, Mrs R. J. Collis;, treasurer, Mrs J. W. Mandhestei* ; "executive, • jXlesdaanes Adams, Black, Smith, and It. Hurst. The Hunt Club is applying tor July 13th as the date of its Steeplechase Meeting. " . Mr P. A Young, the new postmaster, has arrive*.
The Presbyterians are holding a big bazaar aud a baby queen of mis carnival a fortnight hence.
