A NOTABLE SHORTHORN,

The dairv branch of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture has supplied tlie results of the purebred cows whose tests of milk and butter-fat yields w*erc completed during February. Tlie number of privately-owned cows on test oa March Ist was 425, made./up of 55 herds, and comprising 149 milking; Shorthorns, 146 lUawarras, 72 Jerseys, 26 Guernseys, 16 Ayrshires, and 16 Friesians. There were also 101 Government cows on test at experimental farms.

Ihc number, of privately-owned cows which completed a 278 days' test was 22, and included ten Ulawarras, seven milking Shorthorns, two Jerseys, and two Ayrshires. An exceptional result was secured bv the milking Shorthorn MelbaXV., which yielded lS,l3lJib of milk, with an average test of 4.3 per cent., equal to 773.31b of butter-fat. LoveLv o: Glenthornc, a milking Shorthorn,' although 12 years old, yielded 13,6321], of milk, testing 3.9 per cent., and equal to 536.521b butter-fat. An lllawarra cow, Lindv 11., was third on the lis-t with 12,318tb milk, testing 4.3 per cent., and equivalent to 527.311b fat. The only other cow to exceed the 5001b fat limit was Empress V. of Burradale. whose total was 11,941-Jlb milk, averaging 4.3 per cent., and equalling 512.61b fat.

Three cows completed a 365' days' test, comprising an lllawarra, Jersey, and Friesian. The best of "these was a Jersey cow, Daphne, which gave 87761b milk,"testing 5.3 per cent., and equal to 486.661b butter-fat. Of the Government-owned cows, nine completed a 273 days' test. One, a Jersey had her yields recorded lor twelve months, while two had incomplete, tests of 243 days and 213 days respectively, but reached standard.

Rain threatened during the. early part of the dav, but tho afternoon proved all that could bo desired, and the little people enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and keenly contested the various events. _ Before adjourning for tea the prize-giving tooic place, each child ill the school receiving a class prize. Mr Brady, chairman ol ! the School Committee, handed the books to the children. The headmaster, Mr Cooper, then said that as Miss Julia Kennedy, who had been relieving for some nine months, was / going, into tho Training College, the children wished to make her a presentation lrom themselves. Mr Brady also spoke, saying iihat Miss Kennedy was a worthy successor of tho previous teacher, Mre Dawson, the highest compliment • they could pay her. Miss Una Croft, on behalf of the children, then handed Miss Kennedy a nice little handbag. A picnit tea finished tip the day, and at night a danco.was held, from which tho children'also derived a large amount of enjoyment. •Mr AVitham supplied the music. ' . i ' RANGIORA. , • The Rev, J. The annual meeting of tfie football club was held on Wednesday evening, the Rev. A. L. Ca,ntei' presiding. The balance-shcqt showed a credit of Is Bd. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report • and balance-sheet, congratulated the club 011' its success last year.
