SALES OF WHEAT.
auleged BREACH OF begtjlations. (rasas association- teusoram.) DUNEISEN, June 10. In tho Supreme Court to-day, beforo Mr Justice Sim, A. Steven and Co and William Josiah Love (managing director) were sued by the Crown for penalties for alleged breach of the regulations -in respect to the sales of wheat. Mr W. C. McGregor, K.C., appeared for the Crown, and Messrs C. P. Skerrett, K.C., and A. S. Adams, for the defendants. The statement of claim set forth that Love is a largo shareholder, ojso managing director of the defendant company, personally controlling the company's business, and personally r sponsible for tho wholesale buying an selling of grain. A maximum price was fixod on February 25th, 1919, by an Order-in-Council for all wheat in New Zealand, 6uch ordiar still remaining in force, the rate for rree wheat inferior in quality and good milling wheat being 6s 8d per bushel. After last October the defendants sold large quantities of such wheat at pnees exceeding 6s Bd, the excess pnets ranging from 7s 6d to 8s (3d. Tho alleged offences were the sale of ooJ bushels at 7s 6d to Hutchinson, ot Auckland; 167 bushels to tho same firm at 8s; 336 bushels to the same firm at 8s 3d, 167 bushels at Ss 6d to Roach, of Hastings; 345 bushels at 8s 6d to A. S. Pat-erson, Wellington; 300 bushels to the samo firm at Ss (3d; 33d bushels to Birch and Co., Wellington, at 3s 6d; 333 bushels to Leary and Co., Wellington, at 8s 6d; 841 bushels to the Loan and Mercantile Company, Wellington, at 7s 3d; and 798 bushels to the same firm at 7s 6d. | A penalty of £500 was claimed in. respect to each offence. Defendant's statement admitted the sales, but mentioned that the prices included sacks. The case is proceeding.
