Mr John Kilgour, who has been clerk of the Wakanui Rind Board, Ashburton County, since 1897, has resigned. Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., has been appointed chairman of all the Appeal Boards set up during the year 1920, in connexion with the grading of school teachers. The Rev. E. H. Shore, minor canon of the Christchurch Cathedral, has been appointed to the parish of Lower Riccarton. A London message says Sir Charles Lucas, at a meeting of the Royal Colonial Institute, paid a warm tribute to Sir Thomas Mackenzie's services as High Commissioner for Now Zealand. Mr F. C. Chittock, who lias retired from the managership of the firm of Sharpe Bros., to enter into business at Timaru, was entertained at supper, and presented with a brief-bag by the principals of the firm, and a silver egg tray l>y» the staff, as tokens of their esteem. Mr W. Robson, manager of the Invercargill branch of the B:mk of New Zealand, has been promoted to a position in the Head Office, Wellington. Ho will be succeeded at Invercargill by Mr E. McPhail, at present accountant in the Christchurch branch. At yesterday's meeting of tno New Zealand Cricket Council, the chairman, Mr F. C. Raphael, made feeling reference to the death of Mr C. R. Smith, the first secretary of the Council. It was decided to forward a letter of condolence to tlie widow. Mr Samuel Jennings Allen, licensee of the Whit-o Hart Hotel, died last night at the ago of 51 years. The deceased, who was born in London-, was at sea in the employ of' the Union Company for over twenty years. On his retirement he lived at Wanganui and .Dunedin, subsequently coming to Christchurch, where ho became licensee of the White Hart Hotel three and a half years ago. Ho is survived by a. widow. The deceased had been ailing for some time, but only took to bed a few days ago.
