(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS. ') AUCKLAND, June n. V oue»t for information respecting the refusal last evening of the crew of the Aralmra to sail for East Coast ports.with two jockeys and a "racehorse aboard, led t.-> Fo:ne verv humourous copy being ehcited de«r>i»o the seriousness of the dispute. It. may be mentioned that four jockeys booked naia-es bv the Arahura, but only two of them "boarded the vessel hor . se 7 aR a " S ° consigned for shipment by the Arahura, to Gisborr.e by a Mr J. Crak*.. t -'n Nockevs and the horse, however, were still in Auckland when the steamer pp-Wd°*n the harbour, the ci,ew, at a hastily-ca..ed meeting aboard the-vessel, deciding not 1o sail with either jockeys or horse. It is stated in connexion with one of t jockevs that exception had been taken to him 'by the cre.v. on the grounds that of late he has resigned and joined up with "the Jockeys'- Association no less than six ti m ~ In the case of the horse, however, there' is an amusing story to teil despite the inconvenience caused to, and the con sequent disgust oi the owner, by the men who refused to take it to its proposed destmation. The crew, according to rehab.e information, have been on the look out for a racehorse which some party or parties ln- ; tended to ship to an East Coast port. Tiio ; men of the sea were determined tha^ «hou : u not go aboard, and kept a careful r visit." "VVlica Mr Crake's pony came down
the wharf, the crew, evidently with scanty knowledge of the lines of a racer, made the mistake of adjudging it the horse for which they had been on the look-out. Imagine the chagrin of the owner at having his pony turned down after riding it' 92 miles from the north, where it had • carried its owner over the country during cattle-selling operations. The Arahura eventually sailed last evening, two hours late. _ , Another incident in connexion with tne battle of wits between parties concerned with the dispute also came to light. It has to do with a shipment of horses that arrived from New Plymouth last week. it is alleged that a racehorse was smuggled aboard among about fifteen of tho heavy type, and escaped tho vigilance of the crew.
