WHEAT SHORTAGE.
« A NOTE OF ALABM. (By Citbie—Press Association—Copyright.) C'Tha Times.") LONDON, June 8. The Press is sounding a note of alarm in connexion with the world's wheat Tjosition. "The Times" declares that a new food epoch has opened, and that cnergefcic steps must bo taken to_ meet the peril. IBread promises to riEe to un-heard-of prices. "The Times'' urges drastic Government action in the direction of increasing home growing of wheat. The "Daily Mail" estimates /that Europe, on the latest figures, is likely to be short of 1,000,000,0-00 loaves in 1921, and is undoubtedly faced with a bread famine of the worst kind. Every country in Europe, it says, is importing wheat, and none is exporting. Great I3ritain has been left in the lurch, and is 3,0(J0,C00 tons short. Experts say that, on present prices, it is cheaper to grow wheat in England than to buy abroad. There is likely to be a wheat-growing campaign, comparable with the great war agriculture campaign.
THE CANADIAN CROP. (Keuter's Telegrams.) OTTAWA, June 8. The wheat crops in the Canadian prairie areas are regarded sjs the best for 15 years. A QUEENSLAND GUARANTEE. (Received June 9th, 9.45 i>.m.) BRISBANE, June 9. The Stato Government has decided to guarantee farmers 8e per bushel for their wheat crop during tho coming season.
