Mr Fred J Moore, a solicitor from i tho licad Office of 'the Public Trust Office, has taken up the duties of first assistant local deputy Public Trustee in the Christchurch office. Mr W. J. Gow, Assistant Chief Clerk in tho Post and Telegraph Department, and formerly principal correspondence clerk, has been appointed Chief olerk in succession to Mr A. T. Mark man, who row holds the position of First Assistant Secretary. Mr J- H. Howell, director of the Wellington Technical Co'.lcge, and formerly director of the Christchurch Technical College, has been appointed by the Minister of Education to fall the vacancy on the Council of Education caused by tho death of Mr Geo. Hogben. Air G. B. Dall, Second Assistant Seerctarv to' the Post aid Telegraph Department, has resigned from that, position. Ho has a record of 4o years service, as ho joined the Department as a cade* in lnvercargill on July oth, 1875. Though retiring from the Jieaa Office, Mr Dall will retain his connexion with the service, as he is the Government nominee on tho 1 ost anu Telegraph Appeal Board. Mr Clarence Crawford, who is leaving for America in a few days to complete his studies, was presented with a solid leather suit-case by the staff of tho New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Association, with whom he has he'd the position or ■window-dresser and display expert, ilr Franklin, in making the presentation, referred to tho high esteem in which Mr Crawford was held by one , and all throughout the Association, and he t on behalf of the management staff, wished Mr Crawford success in his ambitions and a safe return. Mr Crawford suitably responded. Mr G. Bateman, who has been employed on the staff of "The Press" in tho capacity of a stone-hand, and who is leaving tho employ of the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd., was presented last night by his fellow-workers in the news department with a brief bag, suitably inscribed, as a mark ol : appreciation. Mr F. J. Board, tho Printer of "The Press," in making the presentation, said ho regretted that circumstances compelled Mr Batoman's retirement. He had always found him a good and, conscientious worker, and was sorry indeed to lose his services. .Mr Bateman, in a neat little reply, thanked his co-workers and Mr Board for their kindly remarks. The resignation of Mr W. A. Smith, as secretary of the Patriotic Fund, was received by the executive of that body yesterday, Mr Smith having decided to take up a permanent position in tjie city. Mr H B. Sorensen, in moving that Mr Smith's resignation ho accepted with regret, paid a very high tribute to Mr Smith's services to tho fund. Various other members spoke in terms of the highest eulogism of tho retiring secretary's ability and tact, and it was decided to give him a bonus of £100, and to send him a letter expressing tho executive's great appreciation of his services. Mr R. T. Tosswill, who acted as secretary to the fund during .tho establishment and early development of its activities, was appointed to carry on the work in the tenns of an agree- | ment with him reached by the Adequacy of Funds Committee.
