It was decided to aisk tho Waimairi Tountv Council to improve the lighting on Biccarton avenue. A formal motion was passed, making and 1 levying a jrenoral rate of 3Jd in the £ oil' tho unimproved value. SUMNER. The Sumner Boroueh Council met on Monday Present —The Mayor (the Hon.. J. Barr. M.L.C.), Crs. H. C. Jamiceon, T. E. Whitfield, T. Dryburgfh, C. Benjamin, W. G. Black, H. J. Yates, and F. Gill. Correspondence was received from the Cromwell Borough Council, recommending l .that tho Government be asked to remove the embargo on tho export of hides without delay. Tho letter was received. Tho Hawera Borough Council wTote forwarding' ' a resolution to the' effect that, with a view" to affording relief to tho parents of families during the present abnormal times, the Government be requested to take the necessary steps for the removal of tho duty on children's footwear. It was agreed to support the resolution. • On tho application of the Redcliffs School Committee, it was decided to -grant a rebate on water and sanitary charges. Tho Sumner Fire Brigade wrote asking the Council to give its support to a conccrt to bo held next Monday in aid of an ol'l and esteemed ox-member of tho Fire Brigade and Lifeboat Brigade. The request was agreed to. The Standing reported that the special rolls for the Bedcliffs loan had been prepared,- and, with the objections received, had been handed to the borough solicitor with instructions to appear at Court in support of ( tho district as originally proposed by the Council, and to oppose sll _ applications for exemption. Fifty objections were received, representing «n area of 592 acres, and a rateable value of £28,810. If all ths objections were upheld by tho magistrate, it would mean an increase of over 50 per cent, in tho proposed special areas. A petition had bean received against the proposed waterworks extension In this case the only recourse of toe petitioners was to vote against the proposal. The committee recommended the Council to adopt tho following general estimates, and. ; to levy rates accordingly:—Lighting rate, £412; rate penalty. £20; Government subsidy, £220; licenses and fees, £220; refunds, £50; oundries, £150; hall, £150; baths. £25; ■ separate accounts, £400; water .drainage charges £150; sanitary foc=?_. £225; general rate at 3d, £4125: total, £0148. The general account payments were estimated as follows: —Administration, £561; works, £'!o'Vi; street ■ lighting, £400; grants and honorarium, £95; interest, £60; sundries, £131; had, £389; baths, £.10; war memorial, £2GO; "total, £G143. It also recommended' that Cr. W. C. Black be appointed the Council's representative on the council of the Progress League, and that the Mayor and Cr. Yatc-s bo appointed to represent the Council at tho forthcoming conference regarding tho port question. It recommended that the Council oppese the Canal proposal. It recommended that >'r 11. W. Ileslop be appointed assessor for the borough on the Assessment Court. The report was adopted. ■ It was resolved not to approve of the proposed right-of-way on the Mt. Pleasant Settlement. In response to enquiries made by Cr. Black, the town clerk stated that the residents of Euston street wou'd be duly notified of the installation of the electric li?ht, nnd that 110 penalty would be enforced before that was done. Cr. Whitfield referred to fhe want cf as- I phalt at the Tram stop in Rodclifts. Tho Mayor said the work had been delayed for want of labour. . It was deoided to have the plantation at tho east end of the Esplanade cleaned up. It was resolved to clear the v-efetation from tho roadside near "The Cutting," and to ask the Tramway Board to ercct seats for the use of passengers at that stop. 27EW' BRIGHTON. The Xcw Brighten Boroueh Council Monday nii/ht. Present—The Mayor (Mr F. Kibbiewhite), Crs. E. A: Leaver, J. Gamble, F. Sincock, J. W. Bi-ssett, I{. Stokes, F. Muiraon, J. Eeliamy, and O. IsTae^on. Correspondence from Mr J. Burnside, applying for premium to trim trees in. ths South reserve was referred to the Reserves Committee with power to act. Mr F. Thompson stated that, if the Government road, which he understood was being formed up to Swann street, were taken in a straight line, some of hi 3 land would bo required. Thio he was willing to give, providing the section was filled up to the footpath level. Referred to tho committee. It was resolved to endorse tho letter from the Xew Plymouth Borough C'ouacil dealing ,vith the matter of leans to local bodies. Oa tho motion of Cr. Israelson, seconded by Cr. Bellamy, it was resolved to endorse the following icsolution forwaided by the :t rat ford Borough Council: "That the Gov- j irnment be asked to take tho nccesaary ' ;teps to make Saturday afternoon a universal I lalf-hoiiday throughout the Lo-niinion." It was agreed to advise tho District.
