As many others have done before. Sir David Hutchens bewailod the 'fact on Saturday night that the former forestclad hills round Wellington had been stripped of their magnificent covering. Much of the land had gone back to gorse'and bramble, and at the best the hillsides from which the trees had been removed provided 'very poor grazins. He hoped that some day the hills would bo replanted, but the work would be difficult. Ift Tvas significant, said Sir Dnvid. that under present conditions 100.000 acres of land in New Zealand reverted annually to scrub' and bramble. If the land had remained under timber it would have been a source of pi'ofit for centuries to come.
