The union askeu for a week ot 44 hours, mid the lollov/ing wages:— First year of service, 25s per week; second year, £1 12s lid; third year, £2 ss; fourth year, £3 2s 6a; fifth year, £i ss; theiealter £6 10s. Tho union also asked that ajiy person employed us a shop assistant, without previous experience, from tho age of 17 to 18 years of age, bo treated as having entered upon his or her second year of service. The empk.yara submitted countcr prciposals, providing for the exemption of travellers and messengers from the scope of the award.
Ths union agreed to this clause. An agreement was arrived at with the following wages:—Male workers, first year of service, £1 per week; second year, £1 7s 6d; third year, £1 15s; fourth year, £2 7a 6d; fifth year, £3, and thereafter £i 43 per week. Fecials workers:—First year of service, ISs per week; second year,- £1; third year, £1 ss; fourth year, £1 10s; fifth year, £1 15s, and thereafter £2 per week. A bjnus of Gs per week will bo paid to all adult male workers, 3s per week to adult female workers, and 33 per week to all otner c.afscs of workers. "
It was agreed that the hours of work should be those provided in the Shops and Offices . Act, ths.t holidays should be those provided for in the shop assistants' award, and that the piop&rtion of juniors employed should bo one junior to one f-ouior. The agreement, which will come into operation on July Ist, will continue in force for two years. The award operates over the whole the Canterbury district.
