SPORTING.

RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Br "liOOKF.U-ON.") A strong nor'-wester made training operations on Saturday morning somewhat unpleasant, us clouds of dust rose off the plough, which was in general use. Falstaff was sent six furlongs, and though not asked for his be»t l registered n very fair performance. This Jiorso is improving steadily. "\V. llobbs sent Flight Commander and Actinno six furlongs together. Flight Commander, though apparently loafing, did better than Ins stnblemate, but tho time was not fast. Karo pulled hard while doing a working gallop over six furlongs. She does not look any the worse for her trip to Auckland. G. Murray Avnsley had his team out, but with the exception of W'arlove, who galloped six furlongs under ft pull, they did steady pacing. Wardancer, who lias been taken in hand again, did two rounds at a canter. Mustard Pot freely while going six furlongs at a solid pace, and Amythas, with tho assistance of Burrangong over the last seven, ran a mile at a solid pace, and pulled up sound. Mandrake was sprinted, and La Palx dashed over a short course in nn attractive manner. A. Cutts has docided not to send Onslaught and Winter Wind up for the Wellington Cup meeting. Winter Wind is in work, but Onslaught is enjoying a spell in the paddock.

F. D. Jones luu taken Judroa, Parana and Minsk up. All three aro looking troll.

Gloaming and Hossini have not been worked, and they can be looked upon 03 doubtful runners at the Wellington Meeting.

F. D. Jones has not decided whether Amythas will run in the Wellington Cup or tho Tclcgrnph Handicap; it nil depends upon how the colt does in his work. In tho meantimo, he will bo accepted for in both events. Jones will leave for Trentham on Friday with Amythas, Burrangong, Mandrake, and Mustard Pot.

Leaping Burn broko a fctlock while racing at tho Watfcouaiti Meeting last week and was destroyed.

Probably for the first timo during his long connexion with tho turf in New Zealand a representative of Sir George Clifford's stablo competed in colours other than the well-known light blue and gold cheqiiors of tho southern sportsman (states a northern writer). This was in tho A.R.C. Royal Stakes, in which Moorfowl carried Bagby, who was attired in the purple jacket of Mr A. McDonnld, owing to Sir George Clifford's colours being almost torn to pieces when Heathercoto fell with T. Moid in the Grandstand Handicap, and no other set being available, the colours of Mr McDonald wero substituted. Under tho rules it is compulsory to fine an owner for tho use of wrong colours, irrespective of tho circumstances, and tno penalty was inflicted on Sir George Clifford, which is prpbably also the first time he has had a lino recorded against him. "While in the saddling paddock at Roofton on Friday, Mr H. Cassidy's gelding Red Pool was kicked by Recorder and suffered a broken foreleg. An effort was mado to save tho son of All Red and Whirlpool, but eventually this idea was abandoned, and tho gplding was destroyed on Saturday morning. Tho Napier trainor, G. Jones recently shifted his horses to Woodvillo, where! they will be prepared for the "Wellington Meeting. Tho team consists of Surveyor, Spanner, Golden Bubble, Sasanof (whoso turf carcer was thought to have ended when ho broke down nt Randwiekl, and the two-year-olds Delight and Truthful. The last-named is a filly by Demosthenes—Lily White, and is engaged in the Nursery Handicap on tho opening day at Trontham. R. J. Mason evidently contemplates another trip to Australia. Karo has been entered for tho Newmarket Handinp and Australian Cup, to bo run at Flemineton in March, and the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney C'up nt tho A J.C. Autumn Meeting. (Bt "SEAnCHLIfiFIT."> Prince Akwood died on the evo of tho Waikato Meeting. There was much too long a period between events nt the Inaugural Meeting of the Ellesmere Trotting Club on Saturday. an allowance of 4o minutes being made. This is plenty long enough when tho totalisator business is in full swing, but with nothing to occupy tho
