Before tho Commission of Enquiry Mr Carey, replying to questions, admitted that ho hnd said that cither Vesteys' Meat Company should own the Territory or tho Government should own VestOT?. He told the Federal , Treasurer that Vesteys' business and , tho Territory Administration wero bo mixed Hp that it was impossible to i divorce them. Questioned regarding the troubles ( which led to tho officials leaving the I Territorv, }ie admitted that the population was fairly law-abiding, excepting a few extremists and foreigners. Mr Justice Ewing' stated that rainier, i who was formerly associated with Dr. , Gilruth in Daly Iliver land matters, - had left Australia and was believed to , be in New Zealand. STATE LIQUOR TRADE.
PORT I>ARWIN, January 8. After a public meeting, at which State monopoly of tho liquor trade hi tho Torritory was roundly condemned, a deputation waited oil the Administrator and urged that the hotel hours should be extended as before the war, and that more hotols and a brewery should be provided. Tho speakers stated that sly grog-sell-ing was rampant, and liquor of nn atrocious character was Bold at exorbitant) prices, with the full knowledge of tho police and tho authorities. The result was that deaths and delirium tremens were alarmingly frequent. Ono speaker advocated a local brewery bceaiiso it would do murh towards popularising the Territory with whites. The Administrator promised longer hours, lower prices, and an improved quality of the liquor.
