SWIMMING.
i CANTEEBUEY CENTBE. The nineteenth annual meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the N'ew Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening. Mr Walter Johnson presiding over a good attendiir.ee. The annual report stated that the executive. in retiring from office, did bo thoroughly satisfied that the efforts of tho Centre officials during the war period would bo am;>iy repaid by futuro performances of Canterbury swimmers. During tho year, contrary to tho wish of the Centre, tho Tinwald, "Wharenui, and Lyttclton Clubs had been struck off the roll of membership by the X.Z.A.S.A., and tho Centre had ended the year with a membership of fifteen clubs. This number it was hoped wou'.d be greatly increased during tho incoming season. Tho Dominion Open lOOyds Ladies' Championship, and tho Dominion Intermediate and School Championships hod boon decided in Chiiatchurch during tho year. Tho Centre had been well represented in all events, and the Canterbury representatives moro than held their own in championship events, thus enabling Canterbury to win from Auckland the "War Memorial Shield. The star performers for Canterbury were:—-Miss G. Shand (winner of tho lOOvda Ladies' Championship, lOOyds and 75yds Girls' Intermediate Championship), ('. K. Low (winner of tho 830 yds, 220 yds, and lOOyds Boys' Intermediate Championships), and N. Batchelor (who annexed the 410 yds and lOOyds Schoolboys' Championship, also finishing second in the 220 yds Intermediate Championship). In addition to these champions, YT. Sutherland Intermediate), Misses Bristed and Orubb (Girls' Intermediate), and Misses Simes and Agassiz (school girls), had all performed with great credit to tho Centre, their Clubs and Schools. Six records and thirteen standards wero gained by representatives of tho Centre. Both the Boys' and Girls' Schools Championships had been held, and it was to be regretted that the entries showed a marked falling off. It was cause for xcgret that so littTo interest had been takou by headmasters and thoso in
charge of schools in tho district relative to these Championships. Tho coming season would too the Tt-establishment of tho New Zealand Open Swimming Championships, which would be held at Auckland, and the Centre should make provision to Becnre full representation 4t tlio gathering. It would bo necessary to replenish the touring fund account to enablo this to be carried out. In accordance with the resolution carried by tho Centre during tho early stages of tho war, tho challenge trophies had not been competed for, but would come up for competition in tho coming season. The third competition for tho Yaldhurst Shield had. resulted in a win for East Christchurch. It was regrettable that several of tho larger City Schools had not been better represented, and a tho executive urged delegates to interest 8 1 themselves in the encouraging of swimming in tho puV.ic schools. Great work had been doco at the Tepid Baths during tho past year, an 3 the Centre's best thanks wero duo t to the Bath Committee, Mr Broward, and lii 3 staff, for their very valuable assistance. t> Owing to tho dispute between the N.Z.A.S.A. t and tho Centre, tho sport had suffered con- _ eiderabl© financial loss through the length i of time pending a settlement. The canccl- * ling of tho Show Night Carnival hod he«n > . most unfortunate, as it had always proved i a fruitful source of revenue, but tbo Centre j ■ could not sec its way to hold the Carnival 11 whilo under suspension. Tho estimated cost i J of sending a Canterbury representative team 1; to Auckland was *£130. Unfortunately for [ i the Centre, very liltlo time was available L to raise tho necessary funds, and if Oanter- ■ bury was to bo represented at thoso Chami pionshipa it behoved tho delegates and clubs • to rnako a special effort to raise the necessary funds. Tho Centre expressed its regret at tho unfortunate position that tho preai--1 dent, Mr Walter JrJinaon. has been placed in thrcugh tho action of tho Council relative to tho dispute with tho N.Z.A.S.A. Tho annual balance-sheet showed a cash crodit balance on the general account of £5 13s 4d. On tho touring account thero was a balance of £9 9s 4d, making a total cash credit balance of £15 2s Bd. Tho balanco oi assets over liabilities was £71 10s Bd. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman referred to tho trouble with the N.Z.A.S.A., tho whole of which ho remarked had been an absolute farce. The past season had been fairly satisfactory, and if it had not been wholly so, the good work ths Centre had dono for junior swimmers, in particular, had achieved fino results. The performances put up showed that Canterbury's junior swimmers wero without equal in the Dominion. Mr Johnson remarked especially on tho desirability of raising funds to send a Canterbury team, particularly in regard to juniors, A_ It_. <-.TT_r_: \r i:__ _» » ...1.1 1

The Girls' Intermediate trial will be held at tho Tepid Baths on January 22nd. Votes of thanks wore accorded Messrs J. Toomey and A. Brunsdeo for their assistance to the Centre during the past year. The following commit 100 was appointed to act with the executive to arrange tho carnival:—Messrs Yardlcy, Patten, V. Atkinson, vßarrett, F. Hawortli, J. McCrocken, and L. GUI. s A GILBERTLAN SITUATION. After forty-ono years' active interest in the sport of swimming, Mr Walter Johnson last evening resigned the presidency of the Canterbury Centre of the X.ZA.S.A. Mr Johnson, iu stating that he was not seeking reelection, said that he had decided some time ago not to stand for the position again, hoping to be ablo to go out from the healthiest, manliest, and moat health-giving sport, with the knowledge that ho could rest on his laurels. However, the recent trouble with tho Xew Zealand Association had arisen, and under date of December 15th, he had received » copy of the following resolution passed by the Xew Zealand Union:—"That Messrs \T. Johnson, G. Rich and E. Eldridge be called upon to show cause why they should not be expelled, suspended or otherwise dealt with for per-
fisient defiance of the Council's authority. Mr Johnson remarked that whatever he ha. done, lie had done "off hii own bat." am although ho wjs, as it were, retiring ii ignominy, he would leave it to the CentT to say whether i'j approved cj his actions ii the matter or not. On the motion of Mr A. Barrett seconded by Mr L. Ar.nsnd, it was resolve* that the Centre had every confidence in th< actions Mr Johnson had taken, and that it highest appreciation of his services shouli be plaecd on r?cord. It ••■•as al«o decided to ir.c'.ude the n»iu« of Messrs Rich and Eldiidgo in the motion In face of the motion by the Council, i was rather humorous to see that later ir the evening, the meeting appointed Mr Ricl a vicc-pre«ident of the New Zealand Associa tion, and inter-club handicarper to th< Centre, and also wished Mr E'dridge to re (ttme the position of treasurer to the Centre which he was. for business reasons, urablf to accept. He was. however, appointed local con«ul. and ;i« such will have a seat on th< executive of the Centre. To complete a pomewhat G : 'b"Tt:an Mr John«on wns appointed the Centre'* treayurer, so tka( all three of the oßiciais who had incurred th" Council'* displeasure were returned to oTcial pn«ition*. Each of them was also saddled with other offices besides those already mentioned. LEGALLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE PUBLIC LIFE OF NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, FOR MANY YEARS, STAFF-SERGT.
