SHORTAGE OF NEWS PAPER.

THE POSITION IN CANADA.

(By Cable—Pits* A*?ociiiitm —Copyright.) fltou tor's Telegram*.l OTTAWA January 3. An official denial is {jivon to the report that tho Government contemplate entirely prohibiting the export of newsprint. Tho Canadian newspapers uso 20 per ccnt. of tho output, and the remaining 80 per cent, must be exported; or tho'mdustry would have to close down. The Government's only object in irtterforing was to see that tho Canadian papers got fair supplies as tho first call on tho output. It will not interfere with the balance. There is reason to believe that tho Pacific Coast mills will continue supplying Australasia this year substantially on tho same basis as last 3"oar but publishers everywhere realise that prices arc rising with tho acute scarcity, and all stock have boon wiped out, even the j richest newspapers having to be content with hand-to-mouth supplies. Certainly thero is no hope of Australasia getting moro paper than it has boon receiving from Canada. FThis explanation is no doubt the result of the representations made to the Prime Minister of Cannda by Mr Masspy. at the instigation of Mr P. Sclkt. President of tho Newspaper Proprietors' Association of New Zealand.]
