DECREASE in oases. (POESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January <5. During tho week ended January sth 21 eases of influen&a were reported in tho Wellington health district, and 11 of pneumonia. Dr. Miik-gill, Acting-Chief Health Officer, stated to-day that tho Dominion returns for tho past fortriipht showed a very large diminution in tho number of rases of influenza and pneumonia. During tho week ending December 22nd, 248 cases of influenza wore notified throughout the Dominion, whereas in the week ending January sth, there were but 107 notifications. Regarding pneumonia, 4-3 cases were notified in the week ending December 22nd, and 2o cases in the week ending January sth. Tlio chief diminution in influenza was in Auckland, where tho number of cases in the week ending December 22nd was 224. while only 78 cases wero reported in tho week ending January stn. In Canterbury there had been a marked docreaso also. During tho week ending December 22nd, 20 eases of influenza, and 10 case* of pneumonia were notified, and only fivo of influenza and five of pneumonia during tho week ending January sth. Dr. Makgill added that erven* year for a long time past a number of pneumonia casos following influenza had arisen, nnd the existence of such casos wns of very little significance indcod. There was every rcas:>n to bo satisfied with tho present position, and there was nothing to suggest any alarm whatsoever. STEAMER QUARANTINED. (By Cable.—Pici Anociafioi.—Copjrglit.) (Australian and X.Z. CaMe AsmcUlion.) SYDNEY, January 0. The Dutch steamer Itojigeveen, which recently arrived from New Caledonia, lias l>cen quarantined, owing to an outbreak of influenza on lxiard. A cable message from Noumea states tliat ono of tlio steamer's patients, who was landed there, developed smallpox. Others were nttackod by influenza, and several of the latter died. Tho victims were coolies.
