MH A. BURT. (?peciai, to "run i'hess.") UU.N'EDI.V, January 2. Jlr Alexander Hurt, of tlio wellknown engineering firm of A. and T. Burt, Ltd., who died to-day, was one of the most rcsiicctcd citizens of Dunedin. H > was born on April -Ith, 1840, at Camelon, Stirlingshire. lie came to (jtugo when tho Gabriel's Gully rush broke out., and commenced' business in Dunodin a year later. In 1877 the firm crentnd extensive works, whieh havo since been a hive of industry and the headquarters of one of the largest metal businesses in Australasia. In 1873 .Mr Burt was elected to the City Ccuneil, on whieh he sat for three vears. He also served on tho Otago 'Harbour Board. In recent years lie was host known outside hi.s business as president of the Dunodin Technical! School Association.

Tho deceased, who formerly belonged to Plympton. Tk?von, Enirland, served in tho -Ww Zealand Ex pod it ion ary Foree. Being an able reciter he soon boeamr* known in the Xew Zea'and Division, and delighted many thousands of Xew Zealand soldiers as a member of the Concert Tarty, within the sound of tho guns at the front.. He came to Xew Zealand with th? Concert Party some months ago, and as one of these popular entertainers soon won for himself a warm place in the hearts of the NVw Zealand public. He was particularly good in character sketches, nnd his Mexican recitations always won for him unstinted applause. A tall, commanding and genial personality, lir» bad a host, of friends whi will sincercly mourn hi.s loss.
