King's Medal, two I clasps); Chief Staff OJir-cr Mohmand Expedition, IS9B (despatches, medal and clasp, D.5.0.). lie was secretary to the Government of India in the ' Army Department, and member of the I Governor-General's Legislative Count-7i, i 1912-1-1. In 1914 he was appointed General Oflicer Commanding the Aus- ; tralian and New Zealand Army Corps, : and ho directed the landing and subse- , qtient operations at Anr.ac with signal j success. Subsequently he commanded i tho Anzac Corps in Franco until 191S, ! when ho wns appointed Commander of the Fifth Army m succession to General Gough. Under his leadership the Fifth Army Retrieved its fortunes and played a distinguished part in the final oflensivo in Flanders. For his services in tho war (ho was wounded At Anzac), Lord Birdwood received numerous mentions in despatches. and was mado K.C.M.G., Grand Officer of tho Legion of Honour, Croix de Guerre (French and Belgian), Grand Officer of tho Crown (Belgium). Lord Birdwood arrived in Australia a few days ago, and expocts to visit New Zealand next June.

Earl Midleton, P.C., K.P., was tho ninth viscount of the lire, the viscountcy having been created in 1717. As the Right Hon. St. John Brodrick, he wa? Sir Arthur Schuster was born at Frankfort-on-Main, Prussia, although his father was a Londoner. He is a Ph.D. of Heidelberg; D.Sc. of Manchester ; D.S:;. (Hon.) of Oxford and Calcutta; Sc.D. (Hon.) of Cambridge; D. cs Sc. of Geneva; LL.D. of St. Andrews. Ho is secretary of the Royal Socicty and an authority on seismology and solar research, lie is the author of "Britain's Heritage of Sciencc" and other works.

Ho completed his oducntioii at Cambridge. and was one of England's lending batsmen in the closing years of last centnrv. Tli'o Tl.i£»ht Hon. William Alexander Watt,, P.C., is a Victorian jiroduco merchant. ITe entered the Legislative Assembly in 1897, and was PostmastcrGenernlof Victoria in 1F99-1900. In the latter year he resigned. From 190!) to 1014 ho was Treasurer of Victoria and IVemier from 1912 to 191-1. lie resigned the Premiershin in 1014 and entered the Commonwealth Parliament as member far Balaclava. During tho absence of the Right TTon. W. M. Hughes in Europe. Mr Watt acted as Prime Minister of Australia.

Sir Ttirhnrd Wn thins Richards is the n«wly appointed Lord Mayor of Sydney. Ho was horn at Pembroke, South Wales, in 18(53. and is a civil and ennsnltinc engineer by profession nnd a M. Inst. C.F. From 1902 to 1911 lie w;'s Town Clerk and City F.ngincer of Dunedin. after hiving h*en Citv Surveyor of Sydney from 1887 to 1901. He wric formerly Lord Mayor of Sydnev in 1913-15.
