SCIENCE CONGRESS.
OPENING FUNCTION TO-MORROW.
The Science Congress convened by the jfow Zealand Institute, the arrangements in connexion with which are being carried out by the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, will be formally opened in the Canterbury College Hall to-morrow evening, by his Excellency the Governor-General, who will bo acooropanied by licr Excellency the Countess of Liverpool. An address will 'bo given by the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, Mayor of Christchurch will welcome the delerratcs, and Dr. L. Cockayne will deliver bis presidential address, which wiU deal with the history of the New Zealand Institute. Tho opening function and all the sittings of the three sections into which the Congress has beon divided, and also the ovoning Jectures, will be open free to the public. At 11 a.m. to-narrow the delegates will assemble at Canterbury College, when officers of each section will be appointed, and announcements regarding the proceedings will be mado. At 12.30 p.m. the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. Holland) will extend a civic welcome to tho president and members of the Council of the New Zealand Institute, and to tho delegates and visitors to the Congress, in the City Council Chambers. In tho afternoon there will Kfl excursions to Iticcarton Bush and to Lincoln College. Tho excursions aro not open to the public. . On Wednesday, Ihursday, and Inday mornings tho different sections will meet at Canterbury College. On Wednesday evening, Dr. J. I>. Hollo way will five a lecture on "Vestiges or the rimeval Plant World"; on Thursday evening, Dr. W. N. Benson will lecture on "Mountain Structure, ' and Dr C A Cotton on "Mountain Sculpture"; and on Friday evening Dr. A. B. Poarson will lecture on lhe Influenza Epidemic." .„ On Wednesday. Mr It. M. Laing will civo his paper on "The Vegetation ot Banks Peninsula," and in the afternoon, under Mr Laing's direction, there will be an excursion to Dyer s Pass and Kennedy's Bush. k
CONGRESS PERSONAL ITEMS. Dr. L. Cockayne, the president of the New Zealand Institute, is staying at Coker's. „ Mr B. C. Aston and Professor H. B. Kirk aro at Wa'rner's. The Hon. G. M. Thomson, M.L.C., is staying with Dr. Clias. Chilton. Professor and Miss Easterfield are staying with Mr and Mrs E. F. Stead at "Ilam," Riccarton. Professor Thomas, Auckland, is staying with Mr B. Seth Smith. Mr and Mrs M. A. Eliott, Palmerston North, are staying with Mr S. T J. Raymond, K.C. Mr and Mrs H. Hill (Napier) «re staying with Mr A. W. Beaven. Dr. J. Allan Thomson is staying at Warwick House. Professor and Mrs D. M. Somerville, who arrived yesterday, are staying with Professor J. Macmillan Brown. - Professor H. W. Segar, Auckland, is staying at the Clarendon, but owing to his duties in Auckland leaves tonight for the North. i Mr H. D. Skinner, lecturer in ethnology, Otago University, arrives from the south this evening. He is to give a paper on "Material Culture of the Moriori People."
Sir James "Wilson, ehairmnn of the Council of Agriculture, who 5r expectcd to attend the Congress, is to contribute a paper on "Agriculture's Aid to Scicnce." EXCURSION TO LAKE COLERIDGE. I
Several delegates to the Congress paid'ail enjoyable visit to the hydroelectric power >j at Lake Coleridge yesterday, leaving town at 8.30 a.m. and returning between 6 p.m. and 7pjn.i In view of the possible development of hydrb-electric schemes in the North Island visitors from the North were especially interested in what they saw yesterday., After visiting the intake Junch was partaken of. After lunch, the Hon. G. M. Thomson proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr L. BirljS for the he had taken in organising the excursion, 3\Jr Thomson's remarks being supported by Mr M. A. Eliott, of Pjalmerston North. A visit was then paid to "the power noose. On the return journey some of the visitors came via the Rakaia Gorge, and were much impressed with its 3cenery.
