kesteven cup* The first inter-chib life saving competition of the seafion wns held on the Taylors Miatake beach yesterday afternoon,, when the second, competition for .the Keetoven Oup took place. There wits a large attendance of visitors, the weather being pcrfoct, whi!« the excellent snrf provided the means for' spectacular as well as 4 really searching teat for life saving. Four teams entered—Taylor's Mistake, Sumner, North Beach, and Now Brighton—and the keen interest taken in the competition was proved by the numbers present from each of the clubs. Xh6 competition was run under the new rules .recently adopted by the Canterbury Snrf Association, and although some of the methods came in for some criticism, it via generally acknowledged that the new system hid much to recommend it. The judges were Hosts 0. Bryant uid«F. D. Stokes, and the capable manner in which they carried out their duties was shown r. by the rounds of applause when the announcement was made that the Taylor's Miataka team had won the competition. The work of the winning team was decidedly the best, their method in the breakers being exceptionally good, and for this they were aifaxded the full marks, while they also received highest marks for line and belt work, control of reel, and handling of subject. The work of the North Beach team, which ooou* pied second place, being only two marks behind the winners, was also very good, the team obtaiing highest marks for rescuel and belt work, and also- for nosuueitatkm. Last year's winners, the New Brighton team, lost marks in the resouo and beltmaaVf waterwork, and also in resuscitation. The patron of the Taylor's Mistake Club, Mr A. P. Osborn, welcomed the visitors, and expressed pleasure at seeing so many [ present. He referred to the interest being taken in life saving, and hoped that now.the war was over the clnbs would soon be hack to their full strength. Mr F. D. Keateven, president of 'the Taylor's Mistake Club, at the conclusion pi the \ competition, in ' a happy speech, presented the oup to the 'instructor of the winning team (Mr A. The Sumner Life Saving and Surf Bathing Club met on Saturiay evening, Mr-H.--Buttle presiding. The captain reported that warning notices were being prepared for the reels, and that at the galas at New Brighton and North Beach, club members had been sue. cessful competitors. •Mr IJ. Piercy introduced the matter of 4 swimming bath for the school. Ho moved that a committee lie appointed to go into the matter, and tlia-t the Sohool Committee be acquainted of the proposal, and asked ; to co-operate by sending a delegate. This was seconded by Mr G. F. Allen and carried...!! The captain, Mr Tl. Mitchell, reported thaf a private class was being instructed, ana that he had prepared a team for the K«t| teven Cup. ;r' , It was resolved that the Surf Association be asked to take control of the competition "this year at Sumner. Three new members were elected.
