WAR MEMORIALS.
DARFIELD.
A meeting of Darfield residents was held on Monday. Mr H A. Ivnight presiding, to discuss matters in connexion with the Darfield War Memorial. Tho chairman said that the I>arfield residents had made a start two years ago, and had erected a Memorial Kali. Ho explained the financial position of tint hall, and made various suggestions regarding its upkeep, and, referring to the question of the district memorial, went on to say that tablets must J>o erected in the ii.ill to commemorate t'ie services of those who had gone forth io fight and tho sacrifices made by the fallen. Unless such tablets were erected. he said the hall would not bo a true memorial.
After some considerable discussion, a sul>-committee was set up, consisting of Messrs D. Mulholland, C. G. Jarman_. J. 0. Redfern, and D. Gillanders, to~obiain information as to the cost of a kinema plant and a billiard table for the hall.
A further motion was carried to tlio effect that a committe should bo appointed to consider the erection of suitable memorial tablets in the hall, and to ascertain the views of the surrounding d'stricis regarding a county memorial. Those present •vero formed into such a committee, delegates being allotted to tho various districts. The chairman stated tliat the memorial would apply to all who had served oversea, both in the present war and in the South African war.
At the annual meeting of shareholders in the Memorial Hall, held prior to the other meeting, the financial statement showed a credit l>alanco of £10 3s lid. Officers for the ensuing year wero elected as follows:—Chairman, Mr H. A. Knight; deputy-chair-man, Mr Robert Reid: secretary and treasurer, Mr W. E. McKay; committee, Messrs D. Mulholland, 3>. Gillanders, C. G. Jarinan. and J. 0. Redfern; auditor, i.lr L. R. Ellis.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE FBSSS."
Sir,-:—I read the paragraph in "The Press" this morning in reference to tho illustrations of memorials in the ''Weekly Press" issued to-day. The illustrations referred to, which are very timely, will doubtless be quite a revelation to those • who have been abroad or seen photographs of the memorials, which are all very artistic and beautiful. Of the six illustrations, I think the "Place de la Concorde, Paris/'' is the most fitting for a war memorial in Christchurch, and if we oan get that shelter which disfigures Cathedral square re-! moved,-, there could be no more appro-1 priate situation. Indeed, such a mo-] morial would not only be appropriate, but at the same time it would help to beautify our city, -which is at present so disfigured by the Tramway Board's excrescence.
As the Tramway Board's new offices are now being built, there will be no need tp accommodate any of the staff at the shelter shed,'which, if a shunting and special stoppage place is not required m the Sguare, fiould bo removed. It is not at all necessary that tho centre of the city should be made a station for the tramways, ami J certainty agree with the views expressed by your recent correspondent "6." i hope the public will take this matter up and appeal for funds, independent any subsidy from the Government. It should be a memorial entirely subscribed for by v the people of Ohristchurch or Canterbury.—Yours, etc.,
nu <-* «. v CITIZEN, Ghristchurch, January 28th.
