(Received January 29th, 12.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 20. The Nottingham and Derbyshire colliery owners have withdrawn the notices to the men whom they intended to discharge to make room for demobilised soldiers. The strike has therefore been suspended pending their reinstatement and negotiations for a six-hour day and a Hat rate of wages. CLYDE SHIPYARDS. LONDON, January 20. The Clyde situation continues serious, but unanimity among the workers has not been attained. It is now stated that the union disavows the movement. The employees in many large establishments on the Clyde havo decided to remain at work, pending the union's official instruction*. (Received January 28th, 7.20 p.m.) LONDON, January 27. - The Clyde strikers adopted a resolution not to I'ny rents and ineon'e-tzix until a settlement was reached. There are twenty thousand strikors on the Clyde, and lour thousand at Edinburgh. Nearly one hundred thousand men are idle m Belfast, demanding a fortyfour hour week. Eighteen thousand sliip ropairers in London are striking in support of their demand for an advance of los, making a minimum of £5 per "week. Strikes have brought to a standstill work at the docks in Cardiff, Newport, and Swansea. PARIS TRANSPORT "WORKERS. i PARIS, January 25. I Owing to tho strike, the Government lias taken ovei J control of the city's tubes, tramways, and motor buses, and ordered the employees, who are still soldiers, to resume work pending an enquiry into their grievances. | POLICE ISSUE ULTIMATUM. I LONDON, January 20. The Policemen's Union lias issued an ultimatum threatening drastic action unless an enquiry into the disntfssal of three Midland Railway police is granted before midnight on Monday. The union also demands the reinstatement of the men pending the enquiry. The Homo Office informed the Policemen's Union that the Government did not recognise the union's authority. ENQUIRY PROMISED. (Received January 29th, 12.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 26. The London and Provincial police < striko lias been temporarily averted. The men have been promised an enquiry into tho Midland Railway dismissals. Meanwhile the question of • the recognition of the union remains in abeyance. ] BOILERMAKERS' DECISION.
(Received January 29th, 12.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 26. Tho Boilermakers', Shipbuilders', and Blacksmiths' Unions, after a fresih interview with Mr R. S. Home, Minister of Labour, decided to recommend the calling of a meeting of the full Joint Negotiation Committee and a confereneo of the unions with a view to obtaining the suspension of the rnconfirmed memorandum of December 24th, and to secure wages equal to those of the longer working week. Mr J. R. Clynes strongly urges the holding of a thoroughly representative industrial round the table conference to devise means to prevent strikes. He points out that any changes towards betterment in any given trade should be considered in relation to the claims which, as a result, would be inevitable in other occupations, and the relation of the human claims of the whole community.
The shipyard workers at Belfast are striking to-morrow for a forty-four hour week.
