THE WAIMAKARIRI.
PROTECTIVE WORKS. Yesterday morning the Hon. V. Buddo met the chairman (Mr F. G. Horrell) and members of the Eyro County Council to discuss with them the question of the threatened overflow of the Waimakariri river in the direction of Kaiapoi. The Council and Mr Buddo mado an inspection of the river from a point opposite East Eyreton down to near that portion. of the river running parellei iVitli Belfast. They were much impressed by the recent increased erosion of the banks of the river. The damage appeared to have been caused by the freshes due to the j melting of the heavy snow on the ranges, the river being recently very rarely otherwise than in flood. Following the inspection of the river the party returned to the County Council office, v where, after a ■ discussion, it was decided that the time had arrived for some comprehensive scheme under the control of a properly constituted authority for 'the carrying out of protective works at the earliest opportunity, to obviate the danger threatening the low-lying lands. Afterwards Mr Buddo sent the following telegram to Sir William Eraser, Minister of Public Works: "Met the Eyre County Council at the overflow area of the Waimakariri river to-day. Danger to district and "Kaiapoi town is increasing. I strongly endorse Council's view that the commission you were kind enough to promise should be appointed at oncc to meet danger and make recommendations to control the overflow of the river. Awaiting reply.''
