CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday afternoon. Present —Messrs H. D. Acland (chairman), L. B. Wood. C. H. Opio, 11. lkml, S. G. Raymond. K.C., A. Flower, and Ceo. T. Booth. Mr L B Wood, in accordance with notice, moved: "That the special committee nt present dealing with seconder Education he requested to consider and report upon—(a) the .steps to Sen with regard to the appointment of a Professor of bducation and (b) the question of appointing a Rector for Canterbury College, in pureuance of tho Board's resolutions of June -.4th. 1918. The mover f-nicl that tho special committee referred to had reported mi favour of the ostabhshmont of a Cha,r ! of Education md the appointment of a Professor of Education, to talco effect immediately alter the jar. The committee had also reported that, the question of the appointment oi a Rector should stand in abeyance till the proposed establishment oi a Chair of Mutation came up. • Mr said that thft necessity ior action in this matter arose from the fact that such appointments were virtually determined in tho O'd County in May or .Tune, and if they wanted to have a chance to make th* best appointment they must be prepared to see who are then available. Mr Opio seconded, and said that the proposal of the Education Board to appoint a principal and a vico-priucipal for tho Training College might havo some bearing on the proposal to establish a Chair of Education. | The motion was agreed to. 3 Tho Museum and Library Committee recommended that, in the event of Mt Gilbert Archey, assistant curator of tho iluecum, I who is on active service, being relieved by the militnrv authorities to enable to visit several of the museums in the "United States on his way out from England, the Board contribute a sum not exceeding £100 towards ' any additional expense ho may be put to, on the understanding that the amount so ex- > ponded bv the Board bo refunded in tho L event of Mr Archey terminating hii engagement under the Board within three years from the dale of hi 9 return to duty at the Museum. The committee reported having l decided that the Museum be closed for a week or ten days every September to allow of tho buildings being thoroughly cleansed; and having received advice that their Excellencies the Earl and Countess of Liverpool t have accepted the invitation to be present . at the annual distribution of prizes in con- . ncxion with the School of Art. The report was adopted. The College Committee recommended that I the following lecturers and assistant lecturers be re-uppomtod for the 1019 session:—T. A. I Murphy, lecturer on jurisprudence and law; - Dr. J. C. Bradshaw, lecturer on music; J. Morrison, lecturer on accountancy; T. W. 1 Rowe, assistant lecturer on Jaw; T. W. i Cane, assistant to professors of classics and • English; that the following arrangements, ad suggested by Professor Hight, for carrying. ' on the work of his assistant (Mr Comdliffe) 1 during tho 1019 seesion .be approved: —(a) Mr 1 J. E. Purchase, M.A., to take certain work in history and geography; and (b) Mr D. ' Arnott, M.A., to take a class in economics; ' that Miss Nancy Wagstaff, M.A., and _ Miss Eleanor Jvidson, 8.A., be appointed assistant 1 teachers (general subjects) at tho Girle' High School, 03 from the commencement of the 191!) session, each at. a RaJary at the rate of £170 per annum; that Mfos M. Hansen be j appointed to the position of teacher the preparatory department at th© Girls Sigh School, vioe Miss Webster resigned; that Mrs Blake be appointed to the position of caretaker of the supplementary Girls' High School at Avonside, at a saJary of £1 per week. The committee reported having autbo- 1 rieed the chairman of, the Board and the j Lady Principal to make temporary arrange- j mcnte for filling th® positions of 6cicnco mie- j tress and assistant teachex (commercial subjects) at the Girls' High School. The report was adopted. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Raymond, it was decided to sot up a special committee to consider the question of the salaries of the professorial staff to report on the question of fixing a commencing salary and a minimum salary for professors, ana •whether it is advisable to fix a scale. The committee set up was: —The chairman, Messrs J. C. Aoains, Geo. Booth, C. H. Opie, S. G. Raymond, S. Hurst Seager, and Ij. B. Wood. The following special committee was set up to consider the retirement of the registrar, Mr G. H. Mason, and tho appoTntment of his successor: —The chairman, Messrs J. C. Adams. J., .T. Dougall, A. 15. Plowed, L. M. Isitt, M.P., and L. B. Wood It was decided that tho members <r the Board should visit the Supplementary Girls' High School at Avonside next Monday afternoon.
