POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH. Xo doubt' the surrender of Germany, the elimination of the submarine, and the consequent reduction in shipping freights, have induced people, contemplating building operations, to postpone doing so until a considerable reduction in materials permits of places being erected much more cheaply than, at present. Hence there was a consider, able drop in the value of the building permits issued by the City Surveyor last month. In December, 1918, 10 permits representing a value of £4305 were ifesued' as against 12 permits representing £7795 in) December, 1917. The figures for the various wards are as follows: — 1918. 1917.
