Another astounding story of German-' brutality was revealed at the inquest at Fulham on Private Varder, of the North Hants Regiment. The evidence showed that he failed to understand an order of the German guard. Ho was struck a cruel blow with a rifle butt, causing a severe injury. Varder was not permitted to report sick for some days, when large abscesses had formed on his leg. Blood poisoning supervened, causing death.' He weighed four stone on arrival in England, being formerly twelve. His father failed to recognise him. A verdict of death due to German cruelty and gross neglect was returned.
