THE ONLY UNPARDONABLE SIN.

Dean Inge, speaking on tho characteristics and training of . the Christian gentleman at a meeting of the Parents' Educational Association, held recently at tho house of Lord Glenconner, Queen Anne's gate, London, said the ideal of an English gentleman had been for centuries the lay religion, the week-day religion, of a * great part of our nation, and it embodied those qualities which were most distinctive of our national character. Even a Bishop would be more angry if he were told that he was no gentleman than if ho were told that he was no Christian. (Laughter.) The only unpardonable sin in England was to be a cad—that was, to fall short of the standard of honour to which all gentlemen -had to conform. The ideal was so sacred to, us that we did not like to talk about it or aDDeal to it.
