The Pa"ris correspondent of t!:e "New York World " interviewed Mr AY. M. Hughes, who "The Japanese are a great people, but our ideals and theirs differ fundamentally. We do not wish Japanese expansion in our direction. We have a very small population as compared -with .lanan, and neither our interests nor our aspirations are identical with theirs. Each of us in our different spheres can safeguard tho future while maintaining relations of perfect harmony one with another."
In reference to the naval situation, Mr Hughes said full protection by the British Fleai was necessary for Australia's safety. He did not fear that any difference jvould arise regarding the British and American interpretation of the freedom of the seas.
