FARMERS' UNION.
» MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the North Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held yesterday, Mr D. Jones presiding. A letter -was received from the office of the department of tho Imperial Government Supplies, with reference to the fellmongering by the freezing companies of sheepskins, other than those from stock killed at the works. Tho Controller advised that it was not considered desirable to make any alteration in the regulations. In connexion with this question a letter was received from Mr T. ActonAdams, asking if the union could explain tho reason for the Minister's refusal to allow farmers to have their sheepskins "fellmongered at'the farmers' factories," or, in other words, to "manufacture their own products." No one wished to eliminate the middleman altogether, but in this case of farmers being forced to put their skins through, his hands, Mr Acton-Adams considered that they were being put to unnecessary expense. The chairman reported that the Department had again been written to, asking for the reasons of its action in the matter, and his action in causing the letter to be sent was approved. The Repatriation Board wrote, explaining the scheme for the appointment of District Repatriation Boards in accordance with the Repatriation Act. The union was asked to nominate three members, in order' that a selection might be made to represent the union on the Canterbury Board. It was decided to submit the names of the chairman, and Messrs G. W. Leadley and R. Evans. A circular letter was received from the organiser af the Canterbuiy Progress League, explaining the objects of the League, and the executive decided to discuss the matter of its action m this connexion at the next meeting, when there would probably be a larger attendance of members.
